Challenge
Given the current challenges of climbing student enrolment, teacher retirements and geographical disparities, the ministry sought create data mining and forecasting tools to improve their ability to attract, develop, and retain qualified teachers.
Solution
Following an in depth historical data analysis looking at trends for both students and teachers, Darkhorse Analytics developed jurisdiction-specific demographic forecasts and an intuitive tool to show projected students and required teachers over a 15-year rolling basis.
Result
The forecast tool has been integral to Alberta Education’s workforce planning strategies for over five years now. Though originally produced for workforce planning, forecasts have proved so accurate that the results are now used by several departments within Alberta Education.
